A Website’s Traffic Will Peak at Launch and then Trickle Down
The Problem with Websites
After a website launches, there usually is a week or so where a client sits back admiring their new website and waiting for the potential leads to come rolling in. After an initial surge of website visits in the first few days, the activity then settles down to a lower than expected visitor number. What has happened? The initial surge can be accredited to a social media post or a press release that was released along with the website launch. After the effect of those posts have worn off, you’re left with a more realistic daily visitor number but one that still seems lower than you were expecting. When this happens, the client always tends to ask the developer the following questions:
- Why is my website not showing up in Google ranking searches?
- Why is no one visiting my website (assuming that an analytics program is installed to view this information)?
- Why is no one sending me messages via my contact form?
The answer to all three of these questions is that your website is not optimized to be found by search engines. This is called Search Engine Optimization.
“61% of Search Traffic Only Click on the Top 3 Returned Results”
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Also known as search engine marketing or content marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing a website’s visibility or ranking in the eyes of a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.). Our goal with search engine optimization is to increase our client’s website’s ranking as high as it can go. According to statistics gathered, over 91 percent of search engine users stay on the first results page of Google when looking for an answer to their query. Of those 91 percent, over 61 percent only click on one of the top three result links. This means that gather traffic to your website, you essentially need to be in the top three results in a Google search for your targeted keywords.
What is a Search Engine Target Keyword?
Let’s use an example of a Google search for “Kamloops Web Development”. All three words used, “Kamloops”, “Web” and “Development” are considered keywords. These are the search criteria when Google returns a search page with results to your question that you ask it. We want to rank your website for search terms similar to this example but based on your business type of course. People that search for your company’s name directly are not the user that we are targeting. They are already aware of your business and will probably visit your website anyway. We are interested in marketing your website to people who do not have an answer to their questions yet and we want your website and your company to be that answer.
Organic Vs. Paid Search Engine Marketing
When you look at a Google search results page after you have asked Google a question, you will notice that there are different kinds of website links that are displayed. Typically, at the top and the bottom of the search page, you will see websites displayed with a green box that says Ad underneath the website’s title. These are paid ads from Google using Google AdWords. People are paying Google to display ads that target certain keywords and Google prioritizes these ads because they are making money off of them. Google AdWords marketing is a service that Position Absolute offers and further discussion on it can be found in the Digital Marketing service section.
The remaining websites that are displayed on Google results page that are not marked with a green Ad box are called organic search listings. Organic is a bit of a misnomer though. Although these results do occur naturally when there is no interference from people, they can also most definitely be manipulated by processes such as Search Engine Optimization. This is the service that we offer, to move your website listing as high as it can go, ideally to the top three so that when a potential client asks Google a question about a product or service that you offer, your website will be what that client sees first when that results page is displayed.
A 6 Month Campaign Does Not Mean It Takes 6 Months for Results to Show
What is the Process of SEO?
The process for Search Engine Optimization is not set in stone. It varies from website to website depending on what the client’s website has in place already as well as what the target of the SEO campaign is. The length of an SEO campaign also varies from client to client but typically, we ask for a term of 6 months at minimum to properly establish your website as an authority on your product or service. During those initial 6 months we will:
- Perform an audit of your website to see what areas can be improved upon.
- Perform an extensive keyword research where we find the correct terms to properly market your niche as well as new opportunities for you to gain an advantage on your competition.
- Complete an audit on all external business directories to make sure they are displaying the correct information and linking to the correct locations on your website.
- Using the terms we discovered during the keyword research, we will update and optimize all page titles and descriptions on your website.
- We will instruct Google, Bing and Yahoo to scan and display your website in their search results.
- We will edit, optimize and market all useful subpages on your website.
- We will create, optimize and market new articles and pieces of content that will be added to your website.
Some of these steps happen in the first few months of the SEO campaign, others will happen every month during the campaign. At the end of every month, you will receive a report showing your website’s progress in terms of search ranking as well as a report showing the work that we did on your website for that month. Like was said previously, we ask for 6 months to apply our work to your website at the minimum. This does not mean that it will take 6 months for your results to appear. It also does not mean that your campaign is fixed at 6 months. Campaigns can go on for as long as you wish them to do so. If at the end of 6 months, you wish to focus on another set of search terms or another area of website marketing, we can always make those changes and advise you of the best course of action.
